A podcast

That aims to create community and provide resources to parents of children with special needs. The goal is to create more inclusive environments, educate, and break stigmas around people with disabilities in communities of color.

The Comadreando Podcast is your virtual comadre time where a 1st generation Dominican/LatinX mom of a child with Autism, and special education teacher can be your support and answer any questions you may have from navigating the educational arena, advocating for your child, traveling, talking to family about your child, and even dating... entré comadres.

Show Idea

The idea for the show came to me after appearing on the El Salon Chronicles podcast episode titled “Super Mom, Super Teacher, Super Tired” after publishing that episode we started to receive feedback asking me to host my own show and who am I to deny people what they want and so the idea for the show was born.

When brain storming I decided to think about the type of show and feel I wanted to have. That is where the idea came I thought of my childhood and the close relationship my mother had with her best friend and “Comadre” Cecilia. My auntie would often come over with my cousins and they would promptly dismiss us to the room to play. Then they would start to engage in what they called “Comadre-time”. My mom would put on the “greca” and make a fresh pot of coffee. As they drank their coffee they would spill all the tea as to what was currently happening in their lives. I always wanted to be part of the conversation, but they would promptly dismiss me to go play with the other kids.

Once it was my turn I adopted the custom with my bestfriend Merlin, she would come over with my niece we would have the toddlers play together and would head to the kitchen to put on that fresh pot of coffee and fill each other in. I wanted my show to represent that feel and to create community and awareness around the topic of special education in black and brown communities.

Our Mission

My goal is to ultimately help educate all people about people with special needs whether they have a physical disability or developmental disability. There by creating more inclusive environments where our children with special needs and families feel accepted and supported in our communities. By educating and creating acceptance we are working on breaking down stigmas around people with disabilities in communities of color.

As a mom of a child with special needs I want to create the community and support that I didn’t have when my son was first diagnosed. It was a very isolating event for me and it has taken me many years to acclimate and grow my tribe. There were times that I felt that I didn’t have anyone to talk to about what was going on in my life with my son.

Through hardwork and consistency my son has grown leaps and bounds. My message for the comadres is that no matter where you are in the journey it gets better. I promise you. With the support of this community we can help elevate each other and help our kiddos in the long run.
